MAGIC! are a Canadian band, and their breakthrough was as sudden as it was inescapable. "Rude", released in 2013, was a sunny reggae-pop song about asking a girlfriend's father for his blessing, and its laid-back hook proved impossible to shake. By 2014 it had topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and charts around the world.
Fronted by Nasri, an established songwriter who had written for other pop stars, the band had real pedigree behind the breezy sound. They released more music in the same vein, but nothing recaptured that ubiquity, and "Rude" became both their signature and, for most listeners, their only point of reference.
On streaming, it sits near 2.1 billion plays, while their next genuinely different track trails at under 90 million. That puts the ratio near 12, well past our 5.0 line.
By our measure MAGIC! are a certified one-hit wonder. Theirs is a textbook example of the breezy, single-song crossover: one perfectly pitched pop-reggae hook that conquered a year, then left the band standing in its very large shadow. A decade on, "Rude" is still the only MAGIC! song most listeners can place.
