Pilot were a Scottish pop-rock band who left behind one bright, irresistibly chirpy hit. "Magic", released in 1974, is a sunny, hook-filled slice of mid-70s pop, all "oh, oh, oh, it's magic", and it became an international hit, later finding a long second life in films, adverts, and television decades after its release.
The band had another notable UK hit and counted skilled musicians among their members, but to the wider world they are defined entirely by that one buoyant song.
On streaming, "Magic" sits near 101 million plays, while their next most-streamed track, "January", trails at around five million. That sends the ratio above 18, far past our 5.0 line.
By our measure Pilot are a certified one-hit wonder, with the small caveat that they had a UK number one with another single in their day. To the streaming audience, though, the numbers are clear: one impossibly cheerful pop song, endlessly licensed and rediscovered, has become their lasting calling card, standing far ahead of everything else they recorded. Its sing-along chorus keeps finding new life in trailers and commercials, introducing "Magic" to listeners who have no idea it is half a century old.
