The Story

Tommy Tutone were an American power-pop and rock band, and they achieved a strange kind of immortality by writing a song built around a phone number. "867-5309/Jenny", released in 1981, has one of the most memorable hooks in pop history, so memorable that the number itself became a running cultural joke, with people across the country reportedly fielding calls for the fictional Jenny for years.

Formed in California, the band were briefly part of the skinny-tie, new-wave-tinged rock of the early 1980s, but the phone-number hook swallowed everything else they recorded. Nothing else stuck, and "867-5309/Jenny" became both their signature and, effectively, their entire public legacy.

On streaming, it sits near 128 million plays, while their next genuinely different track barely registers. The ratio lands above 11, well past our 5.0 line.

By our measure Tommy Tutone are a certified one-hit wonder, and a gloriously pure one. Few artists are defined so completely by a single hook, and fewer still by one that doubles as a telephone number people still recognise decades later. You can still hear a room shout the digits back at the chorus.
